The real tale of an Indian Postman - An unsung hero...

This is a real story of an Indian Postman Sri D. Sivan who retired in June 2020.  Postman D. Sivan, in his 30 years of service in Tamil Nadu (India), braved many adversities while delivering postal letters to the remote areas where there was hardly any vehicle would go. Daily he used to trek for nearly 15 kilometres through the hilly terrain of Coonoor every day.

“Postman D. Sivan walked 15 kms everyday through thick forests to deliver mail in inaccessible areas in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Chased by wild elephants, bears, gaurs, crossing slippery streams and waterfalls he did his duty with utmost dedication for 30 years till he retired last week”- Tweeted an IAS officer Supriya Sahu on 08-July-2020.

In 2016, he walked along the Nilgiri mountain railway track, starting from the Hillgrove Post Office near Coonoor, treading railway bridges, either carrying mail or pension to the plantation workers who lived near the forests on the Singara Estate, near Buriliyar, and Marapallam.

Sri D.Sivan said “I have three years left for retirement. I enjoy serving the people, and I will do that till I retire,” he said, resuming his trek just 3 years before his retirement

S. Sagathevan, a resident of Coonoor recalled how D.Sivan had tracked a pensioner who was admitted to a hospital and delivered his pension money to address his hospital expenses. The interesting thing is that D.Sivan has paid out of his pocket for the trip to deliver the pension to the needy person.

“We always offer him tea, but he declines and offers to buy us some instead,” said Sagathevan. D.Sivan was paid Rs. 12,000 a month when he retired from his service in June, 2020.

This real story of D. Sivan motivates many of us in many ways to do our nobler jobs despite many adversities. We also need seniors like IAS officer Supriya Sahu who used her platform to recognize such unsung heroes.
